Wildlife Ecology & Management

Wild Turkey
White-tailed Deer
Texas Horned Lizard

Wildlife research conducted by Institute scientists provides baseline information on game species, nongame species, and threatened and endangered species. This research may be used to aid in the development of future wildlife management plans, practices, and policies as well as providing the framework for conservation and biodiversity assessments using an ecosystem-based management approach.

Game species such as white-tailed deer, northern bobwhites, scaled quail, ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, wild turkey, and white-winged doves are important wildlife species in south Texas. Institute researchers have made valuable contributions toward understanding their biology, ecology, and management.

One of the important game species in south Texas is the white-tailed deer. CKWRI researchers are focusing on developing strategies for habitat and population management, evaluating deer genetics, improving census techniques, and determining the effects of predation.

Institute personnel are pursuing research opportunities in the area of nongame wildlife such as wading birds, shorebirds, small mammals, and birds of prey.
