Citizen science is the most recently adopted focus area of the Institute, which aims to promote wildlife related projects involving volunteer help from the public. Landowners, land managers, wildlife enthusiasts, school children, and public citizens can all take part in data collection.
The South Texas Wintering Bird Program, spear-headed by Thomas Langscheid, provides a web-based opportunity accessible by the public. The public can report bird sightings and the data can then be compiled to monitor migratory bird movements across South Texas.
Quail Associates is another program whereby landowners and land-managers collect data each year. The information compiled from the participants is then sent to the Institute for analysis and dissemination.
