Knotgrass is a common, early-mid succesional plant on sand and sandy loam ecological sites in south Texas.  Knotgrass is an excellent seed producer for wildlife, and bobwhite quail frequently consume the seeds.  Forage value of knotgrass is thought to be fair to good.  Knotgrass has many characteristics that make it very desirable for development, including its value to wildlife, stature, seed production potential and ease of harvest.  Screening of collections from south Texas to date has shown problems with poor seed fill and poor active germination.
