Coyotillo

(Karwinskia humboldtiana)

Coyotillo is a common component found throughout South Texas in all types of soils and habitats, but prefers drier areas and shallow soils.  It frequently grows in association with guajillo and blackbrush communities.  The seeds and leaves are poisonous to cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and swine but palatable to coyotes.  Coyotillo is not usually grazed unless extreme drought conditions exist.
