Stephen J. DeMaso, Ph.D.
Research Scientist
Steve is a native of Battle Creek, Michigan, but came to Texas as soon as he could. Steve once said “If I can live in a state where I can bird hunt and not have to shovel snow, I’ll be there for a while.”
Steve is the Director of Upland Game Bird Research for the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Before coming to Kingsville, Steve served as the Upland Game Bird Program Leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Austin, Texas. Prior to moving to Texas, he worked for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and served as the lead researcher on the nationally recognized Packsaddle Quail Research Project. Steve received his B.S. in Wildlife Biology from Michigan State University, M.S. in Range and Wildlife Management from Texas A&I University, and a Ph.D. in Wildlife Science in the joint program between Texas A&M University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville. His dissertation research focused on population dynamics of northern bobwhites in southern Texas.
Steve’s research interests include upland game bird ecology, habitat management, and conservation. During his free time, he enjoys upland bird hunting, training English pointers and German short hairs, and shotgun shooting sports.
