Mauricio was born and raised in Mexico City, where he studied veterinary medicine at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where he focused on wildlife animals. At the same university, Mauricio completed his Master of Science, working on conservation genetics in ocelots. Mauricio has worked on various projects related to endangered species, such as the reintroduction of the scarlet macaw in the Gulf of Mexico region, applied genetics in Mexican small cats, the reintroduction of Barbary macaque in Morocco, and amazonian species in Peru. Mauricio is currently very happy to be at CKWRI and to be able to develop his thesis project focused on the dynamics of diseases transmission among mesocarnivores that affect the ocelot.
