About Us

Based in Lubbock, TX, CKWRI has expanded its presence to northern Texas and beyond where research is needed to manage large mammals, game birds, and the myriad of other species that live there. Within and beyond the Texas border, the southwest deserts and southern Great Plains offer abundant wildlife resources including large mammal communities comprised of many iconic North American ungulates such as bison, pronghorn, elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer and bighorn sheep, and carnivores including Mexican wolves, mountain lions, coyotes, swift foxes, and bobcats. The region faces many regulatory and policy issues that require applied research to inform management decisions. For example, the region faces conservation challenges due to intense agriculture, energy development, diminishing groundwater resources, large carnivore restoration efforts, and the emergence of wildlife diseases including Chronic Wasting Disease. CKWRI has strategically approached this geographical investment to address these needs by developing a remote research program in the southern Great Plains.
