Agarito is an evergreen shrub found throughout the Rio Grande Plains. It grows on a variety of sites but most frequently on gravelly hillsides as part of a mixed brush community. It is an excellent wildlife plant, as many species of wildlife readily consume the red fruit. Agarito seed should be cleaned upon collection. Each berry contains several seed. Seeds should be cold scarified to break embryo dormancy. Natural germination of agarito is low. Agarito is difficult to grow from cuttings.
