Rio Grande bristlegrass is found on sandy loam, clay and loamy soils in South Texas. It produces fair forage for livestock and seed consumed by bobwhite quail and other wildlife. Rio Grande bristlegrass collections evaluated to date have poor seed fill, low active germination, and indeterminate seed ripening making development of a germplasm of this species difficult. STN is currently seeking additional collections of this species in an effort to find ecotypes that posses the desired traits for restoration use.
