Green sprangletop is a common grass of the more arid portions of south Texas. It is commonly found on fine textured soils and gravely uplands in the region. Green sprangletop provides good forage for livestock and provides nesting cover for grassland birds. This grass has excellent seedling vigor and is easy to establish from seed. A cultivar release of green sprangletop from west Texas, “Van Horn” is commonly used in conservation and restoration plantings in south Texas, and provides excellent early cover and soil stabilization. This release is poorly adapted to southern Texas, and commonly dies out by the second year after planting, but it is useful as a native grass cover crop. STN and the PMC have obtained a number of south Texas collections of this species, with a goal to develop a south Texas adapted variety of this grass.
