Red lovegrass is a common early succession grass on sand and sandy loam ecological sites in South Texas. It provides poor forage and limited value to wildlife. Red lovegrass has good potential for use in restoration of sandy sites in south Texas. Seedheads are produced throughout the year under favorable conditions, are held well above the foliage, and do not shatter upon ripening. Red lovegrass would be an excellent grass species for highway rights-of-way plantings, and reclamation efforts on sandy soils. STN is currently seeking collections of this grass from South Texas to evaluate and develop a germplasm of this species in future years.
