Sand dropseed is an early succesional species found on many soil types in South Texas. It provides fair forage and seed consumed by bobwhite quail and Rio Grande Wild Turkeys. Sand dropseed is a common component of range seeding mixes in Texas and the southwest. It has good establishment characteristics and is able to establish on highly disturbed planting sites. A commercially available source Borden County Germplasm Sand Dropseed is commonly used in conservation and highway rights-of-way plantings in South Texas, long term persistence and performance of this germplasm in South Texas has not been documented. STN is currently seeking collections of this species from across the region to evaluate the potential for a South Texas material of this species.
